Pre-Season Power Rankings [Aug. 17th, 2009|11:31 am]
St. Louis Blues

Yahoo! Sports has the Blues ranked 15th in their pre-season power rankings. Seems a really safe call for a team that has to rise fast through the ranks just to make the playoffs. But a team that was dead last in Feb and played their hearts out to finish 6th in the conference seems like a team on the rise to me. I'd put them in the 11-13th area of the rankings.

Andy Strickland reports that the Blues have re-signed Brad Winchester and Mike Weaver to one year, $800,000 contracts.

Blues have also bought out the contract of Jay McKee. This leaves them with a cap hit of $1.3m for the next two seasons. A lot better than £4m!!

Strickland also says the Blues are interested in Sergei Zubov.

Keith Tkachuk, the savvy forward who helped lead the St. Louis Blues to the playoffs for the first time since 2004, will be back for another year.

Blues in Six? [Apr. 15th, 2009|09:21 am]

At least one sports writer had picked the Blues to make it past the first round, and in six games at that.

Another, when forced to pick an upset in the first round, picked the Blues as well.

Sixth! [Apr. 13th, 2009|07:56 am]

With the Blues knocking of Denver in the regular-season finale along with Minnesota beating Columbus and Phoenix beating Anaheim in a shootout, but Blues have finished their meteoric rise by coming up from dead last in the Western Conference to finish a sixth in the course of exactly two months. That's just incredible. A last place team in February goes a league-best 25-9-7 to finish the season, makes the post-season, and avoids a 1-8 or a 2-7 match up and gets seeded 6th to face the 3rd place team.

The Blues will start their return to the Stanley Cup playoffs on Wednesday in Vancouver at 9 PM CT. Vancouver finished with more points (of course), but the Blues are not only the hottest team in hockey since February, but also finished the season with a West-best 9-1-1 record. The Blues and the Canucks also split the regular-season series tied at 2-2 and each team won a road game. Even the goals scored were almost even with Vancouver edging out the Blues 15-14.

The early picks that I've seen are saying that the Canucks are the team to beat for the Cup in the West, but I think it's too easy to discount the Blues with their poor showing these past few years.

One of the few times ever that I want the Red Wings to win and they don't. With the win tonight, Nashville ties the Blues with 88 point. Of course, the Blues have two games left to play while Nashville only has one. Win out and the Blues are in the playoffs and Nashville won't be able to do anything about it.

Blues in 8th with 6 to go [Mar. 30th, 2009|07:43 am]

The good news: With only six games left in the season, but Blues have moved into sole possession of the eighth, and final, playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The bad news: Five of the final six games are on the road where the Blues have a 15-17-4 record compared to a home record of 22-13-5. Let's just hope this playoff momentum follows them away from home.

However, the Blues have been hot in the second half of the season. Since Jan 3 the Blues are tied with Detroit for the most points earned in the league but have played one fewer games than the Blues.

Final six games:
